Yes, this is exciting to see Intune supporting Linux!
On Tuesday October 4, Microsoft said that an upcoming update will provide support for managing Linux desktops with Microsoft Intune, the mobile management solution offered as part of the Microsoft Endpoint Manager package.
In October 2022, when Microsoft upgrades Intune, the first Ubuntu LTS versions supported for Intune management will be 22.04 and 20.04. For Intune administration, other Linux OS versions will be supported. Microsoft didn’t say which Linux distributions it would offer, but it did say that it would offer more in the “coming months.”
Many users may have mistakenly assumed that Intune already allowed for the administration of Linux-based devices, but this is actually a brand-new feature. Intune’s ability to control “Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices” was already present, but Linux management from Intune was something new in device management.
What is really there in Linux support and Intune October Update
There was no mention of when exactly in October 2022 that Intune would receive its upgrade. However, when the update has been implemented, Intune will be able to do the following:
- Enrolment for Microsoft Edge Conditional Access policy enrolment for Ubuntu LTS (22.04, 20.04) desktops
- Normalized policies for conformity
- Bash scripts for bespoke compliance policies are supported.
- For IT administrators, conditional access rules in Azure Active Directory will allow them to predefine requirements for Linux computers to meet before they can gain access to company data.
- Compliance policies established by an organisation can be enforced on Linux devices.
In a future update to Microsoft Endpoint Manager, users will be able to write Bash scripts to manage Linux device settings “in a few weeks.
If you’re using Linux, you’ll be able to take advantage of “access to more features,” such as “custom backdrops, gallery view, responses, and raise hand in meetings, as well as huge gallery and combined mode views,” according to the release.
The Teams Web app and the Teams progressive Web app for Linux will also support Conditional Access setups through Microsoft Endpoint Manager, as per the release.
IT professionals would be able to accomplish things like distributing Wi-Fi profiles and certificates to Linux desktops thanks to this scripting feature “that’s what the statement was trying to say. As an additional feature, “pre-defined scripts” are on the way.
