Is Microsoft Intune Safe?

When you enroll a device in Microsoft Intune, your personal information is not visible to anybody outside of your company. With each device you enrol, you provide your organisation access to see specific bits of information about that device, such as its model and serial number. This information is used by your company to assist in the protection of corporate data stored on the device.

What your company isn’t seeing is the following:

  • History of phone calls and online surfing
  • Emails and text messages are also not visible.
  • Contacts, Calendar, Passwords
  • Photographs, including those stored in the pictures app or the camera roll.
  • Files
  • When using corporate-owned devices with a work profile, the apps and data in your personal profile will be available to you.

This is something your company can always see:

  • The device model, such as the Google Pixel
  • Device maker, such as Microsoft; operating system and version, such as iOS 12.0.1; and other information.
  • App inventories and names, such as Microsoft Word, are included. On personal devices, only the apps that are controlled by your organisation are visible to your organisation. In the case of corporate-owned fully controlled and dedicated devices, your company will be able to view the entire list of apps available. When you use a corporate-owned smartphone with a work profile, your company can only view the apps listed in your work profile, not the rest of your device.
  • Ownership of the device Name of the device
  • IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number of the device

What your company may be able to observe is as follows:

  • The phone number shown on corporate-owned smartphones is the complete number provided by the company. When using a personal-owned smartphone, just the last four digits of your phone number are accessible to your employer or other third parties. The ownership type of any particular device may be seen on the Device Details page for that device.
  • Device storage space: Whether you are unable to instal a necessary app, your company may examine your device’s storage capacity to see if there is insufficient space on your device.
  • It is possible to track the whereabouts of a misplaced gadget if it belongs to your company and it is corporate-owned. When it comes to personally owned devices, your company is not aware of the device’s whereabouts. More information regarding monitored devices may be found in the Apple iOS documentation.
  • Inventory information for the app: If your business makes use of Mobile Threat Defense, they will be able to see information about the applications that are currently running on your iPhone or iPad. Learn more about Mobile Threat Defense by visiting their website. Otherwise, your company can only view your managed app inventory on personal-owned devices, and not the apps that you have downloaded. When it comes to corporate-owned smartphones, your company has access to the whole app catalogue.
  • Information about network connections for Android devices: Your organization’s support staff may have access to some information regarding network connections for Android devices. For example, if your company mandates that devices stay inside a certain building, your device would identify the network to which it is connected in order to comply.
